1. What deteriorates, and in what order
Not everything ages at the same rate, and that’s what makes preservation counterintuitive.
- Terpenes —they’re the first to go, by far. They’re volatile by nature: they don’t degrade, they evaporate. That’s what you lose first—and what you’ll never get back.
- Cannabinoids —significantly more stable. Their levels don’t plummet within a few months under normal conditions.
- Texture —it changes last, either by drying out or softening.
This leads to a phenomenon that many observe but cannot explain: a resin can have exactly the same concentration six months later and yet be completely worthless. Laboratory analysis doesn’t measure what you’ve lost.

2. What Happens Even Before the Sale
Resin that’s been stored properly at home will never make up for resin that was mishandled during production. Two steps determine everything—and they’re invisible to you.
Cold processing
We always sift cold. The cold makes the trichomes brittle and facilitates their clean separation from the stem—whereas handling them at room temperature crushes the buds against the mesh and releases their contents prematurely.
An intact bud is one that keeps its terpenes locked inside. A crushed bud has already begun to evaporate before it’s even pressed. This is why two resins from the same source can age very differently.

Curing at Room Temperature
After sifting comes a phase that the market never mentions: slow curing at room temperature.
This isn’t about drying. It’s about letting the material stabilize at its own pace, releasing residual moisture, and allowing the flavor profile to develop. Resin that is sealed immediately after extraction traps its moisture —and this is what causes, weeks later, those musty odors that are mistakenly attributed to the customer’s storage conditions.
A botched curing process cannot be remedied by any storage method. This also explains why resin purchased directly from the source holds up better over time than resin that has passed through several rushed intermediaries.
3. The Four Enemies, in Order of Importance
Heat
This is the number one factor, and it’s constantly at work. Every additional degree accelerates the evaporation of the lightest compounds—the ones that give the resin its fresh, peppery, and lemony notes.
Above 20°C, the loss becomes rapid. A bar left near a radiator or in a car loses in a single afternoon what months of proper storage would have preserved.
Air
Oxidation causes continuous degradation and darkens the surface. What matters here isn’t just the airtightness—it’s the volume of air trapped with the product.
A jar that’s half empty contains as much oxygen as it does resin. A full container ages significantly slower than one that’s half-full.
Light
UV rays break down aromatic molecules. A clear jar on a well-lit shelf is the worst possible storage option—and it’s the most common. Tinted glass, an opaque container, or simply a closed cabinet.
Handling
This factor is overlooked by everyone, yet it matters. Every time you handle the product with warm hands, it softens the surface and breaks down the resin glands. Every time you open the container, you introduce fresh air.
A pack handled daily degrades much faster than the same pack left undisturbed, regardless of everything else.
4. Three Temperatures for Three Uses
The question isn’t “what’s the right temperature,” but how often will you open the container? That’s what matters, and here’s why.
The colder the contents are compared to the ambient air, the more condensation forms when the container is opened. For a container that isn’t opened, this has no consequences. For a jar opened every day, it’s a sure way to spoil the contents.
Daily Use — 16 to 18 °C
This is the temperature we recommend to end customers, and the one listed on our product sheets. The difference from the ambient air remains small enough that no condensation forms, even if you open the jar several times a day.
Stability is just as important as temperature. A cabinet maintained at a constant 18 °C preserves items better than a location where the temperature fluctuates between 14 and 24 °C throughout the seasons.
Humidity, between 55 and 62%
It is often claimed that resin, unlike flowers, does not require humidity. This is false, and the tolerance range is even narrower.
Below 55%, the resin dries out: it becomes brittle, and the trichomes break at the slightest touch. Above 62%, the risk shifts toward mold —and for a substance intended for consumption, this is non-negotiable.
For home use, a humidity controller set to 62% placed inside the jar maintains this level without supervision.
Stock that isn’t moving — 8 to 10 °C
This is our professional storage temperature, used in our storage units and those of our partner stores. Colder temperatures provide better preservation: the evaporation of terpenes slows significantly.
The trade-off is as explained above: at this temperature, an open container left in a room-temperature environment will develop condensation. That’s why this setting is suitable for a reserve, not for an everyday jar.
The rule is therefore the same as for the freezer, but a bit more flexible: let the closed container return to room temperature before opening it.
Long-Term Storage — The Freezer
Contrary to what you often read, the freezer is the best solution for storing large quantities over the long term. The cold halts all processes: evaporation, oxidation, and degradation.
It’s only a problem if you use it like a pantry. Freeze in pre-portioned amounts, so you only take out what you’re going to transfer to short-term storage.
Three rules, and none of them is optional:
- Use glass, never plastic. A bar of chocolate stored for a long time in contact with flexible plastic will eventually absorb some of the plastic’s properties. Glass is neutral.
- Let the closed container return to room temperature before opening it. Allow several hours.
- Handle with care. Frozen resin is as brittle as glass: drop it, and the slab shatters. It also fractures rather than molding while it’s cold—every fragment is a broken gland.
5. The Container
Glass is the only option. Neutral and airtight, it does not leach into the contents or absorb anything.
What to avoid:
- Plastic bags —they aren’t gas-tight, and static electricity literally rips the trichomes off against the walls. Yet this is the most common packaging.
- Extended-contact flexible plastic —when in contact with the lipids in resin, certain plastics eventually leach into it.
- Paper —it absorbs oils and allows air to pass through.
Baking paper is still acceptable for wrapping a slab inside a jar: it prevents direct contact with the glass without creating an additional barrier.
6. The one thing that really makes a difference
If you take away just one thing from this article, let it be this.
Divide your purchase as soon as you receive it. Put a small portion in a working jar, and the rest in one or two sealed jars that you don’t open.
The logic is simple: the portion you’re currently using is exposed to all the opening and handling, but it represents only a fraction of your purchase. The rest remains untouched.
By the last gram, compared to a single jar opened every day for two months, the difference is considerable. And this method costs only two jars.
7. How long, really?
Rough estimates, under ideal conditions:
- First month —the product is at its best.
- One to three months —the aroma softens slightly, especially the fresh and peppery notes. It’s still very good.
- Three to six months —loss of complexity. The heavy, sweet notes often remain, giving the misleading impression of a different profile.
- After one year — the cannabinoids are still there, but the aroma is gone.
These timeframes assume a stable temperature and a suitable container. At 16–18 °C in a temperate environment, resin lasts well beyond these guidelines—which is precisely why we store it this way.
But the best way to preserve it is to buy wisely: it’s better to buy what you’ll consume within three months than to stockpile a year’s supply.
8. Recognizing a Poorly Stored Product
These signs apply to both your stock and a new purchase.
- No smell when cold —the terpenes are gone. This is the most reliable sign.
- A dull surface that no longer catches the light.
- A crumbly resin that no longer softens under your fingers—drying out.
- Oily resin at room temperature—prolonged heat exposure. Don’t confusethis with added oil, which we cover in detail in our article on how to spot fake resin.
- A musty or damp smell —stop right there. When it comes to a substance intended for consumption, there’s no room for doubt.
One thing is clear: you cannot recover lost terpenes. The methods that are circulating—citrus zest, a piece of bread, a slice of apple—only add moisture. They alter the texture and mask the issue temporarily; they don’t restore anything. With resin, they do more harm than good.
