Trichomes: Nature's Microscopic Guardians

Discreet but essential, trichomes play a fundamental role in the plant world. Present on many plants, they can be used for defence, to capture prey or to protect sensitive organs. In cannabis, these tiny structures are particularly important, as they are central to the production of cannabinoids and the effects that result from them. This article explores the role of trichomes, their specific characteristics in cannabis and their close link to hashish.

Cannabis Trichomes: A Special Case

Cannabis also has trichomes that perform various biological functions. In this case, rest assured that they do not have any stinging or carnivorous properties, but cannabis trichomes do have certain unique characteristics, which we will describe here.

Cannabis has several types of trichomes, some of which are quite common and found on many other plants, such as those on the roots or under the leaves, but here we will take a closer look at the glandular and resinous trichomes found on the flowers. It is this category of trichomes that is the most unique and is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.

These trichomes, which look more like small mushrooms than hairs, fulfil many physiological functions for the cannabis plant, and research is still ongoing into their usefulness. They are found mainly on the cannabis flower and in smaller quantities on the leaves.

Beyond their unusual shape, their originality lies mainly in the fact that they concentrate most of the cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant and are therefore responsible for its psychoactive effects. They appear to be present to protect the seeds of the cannabis flower from the sun, insects and predators.

The presence of cannabinoids in these trichomes could also be explained by an evolutionary function that allowed cannabis to protect itself from herbivorous predators by giving them a "bad trip" that would repel them until the next encounter, much like poisonous plants.

Hashish and Cannabis Trichomes

Hashish is closely linked to trichomes, as it is composed entirely of them. Hashish is simply a collection of these trichomes arranged in bars or balls. The aim is to produce a cannabis by-product that is even more concentrated in psychoactive agents.

Hash is often referred to as "pollen", but this is scientifically incorrect since hash is produced from unfertilised female flowers, which by definition do not secrete pollen, unlike male flowers. It is actually trichome!
