From the cannabis plant to CBD hash: the complete journey

Between a seed and a block of hash, six months pass and about ten decisions are made. Any one of them could ruin everything.

Step 1 — The plant produces its resin

It all starts with a defense mechanism. Cannabis produces trichomes —microscopic glands—to protect itself from UV rays, insects, and mold.

These glands contain virtually all of the cannabinoids and terpenes. The rest of the plant contains almost none.

An important consequence: a plant that’s under stress produces more resin than a plant that’s thriving. It’s a natural response, and it explains much of the difference between outdoor and indoor cultivation.

Step 2 — Harvest Time

Trichomes change color as they mature: translucent, then milky, then amber.

Resin concentration peaks during the milky stage. Harvesting too early yields little resin; harvesting too late results in heavy, oxidized aromas.

There’s no specific date on a calendar—it takes a magnifying glass and a trained eye.

Step 3 — Drying

This is the most underestimated step—and the one where the most is lost.

Trichomes degrade when exposed to heat, light, oxygen, and handling. A flower that’s been dried improperly or handled too much has already lost some of its potential before it even reaches the sieve.

Poor-quality resin is very often the result of a good flower that was mishandled.

The heart of the process: separating the trichomes from the plant material without damaging them.

There are five methods—dry sifting, ice water, hand-rolled charas, pressed rosin, and static extraction. Each yields a different product, and none is inherently superior to the others.

Step 5 — Sorting by Fineness

Trichome heads measure between 50 and 120 microns. They can therefore be sorted using screens of decreasing fineness.

This explains the numbers listed on labels— and why some sellers deliberately remain vague. A single number means nothing; you need a range.

Step 6 — Pressing

Unpressed trichome powder burns instantly. Pressing binds it into a compact mass: combustion slows down, and shelf life improves.

⚠️ One rule: never too hot. Excessive heat causes the terpenes to evaporate irreversibly. The hash turns black, hardens, and loses its aroma.

This is the final step—and one of the easiest to get wrong.
